Biggs wins 100th, Baseball crushes Jarvis Christian
Wiley University head baseball coach Kendrick Biggs can add another milestone to his coaching career as he won his 100th game in the Wildcats 18-4 run-rule victory over their Highway 80 rival Jarvis Christian University Tuesday at Airport Park.
Biggs, who is in his ninth season leading the Wildcats, joins Pedro Ithier and Eddie Watson in accomplishing the milestone. Fifty-six of his victories have occurred in front of the home fans. The victory is Biggs' third over Jarvis Christian University.
"I feel honored," Biggs said. "It's not as easy as everyone thinks. I appreciate all the hard work that the guys that have come through the program put in to get me where I am."
It is Wiley's first victory over the Bulldogs since 2019, ending a five-game losing streak in the series and an eight-game losing streak this season. The Wildcats move to 2-5 at home.
Eight players recorded hits and all nine players scored a run. Ryan Ready went 4-for-4 with a triple, three runs and four runs batted in. Jhan Carlos Javier went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Allan Mendoza went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and three runs batted in. Abel Rodriguez went 2-for-4, hitting his first career home run and drove in three runs. Anthony Castaneda went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Kai Woodard hit an RBI double and scored two runs. Eddie Garza went 2-for-4 and scored three runs.
Josiah Jackson made his first career start and went the distance. He struck out five batters, earning his first career victory. Jackson escaped the second and third innings with a runner on third with one out. Catcher Anthony Castaneda helped get Jackson through innings by throwing out two runners stealing bases.
The Wildcats (3-12) scored every inning and put up multiple runs in five innings. After giving up two runs in the first on three hits, Eddie Garza and Kai Woodard walked. Garza got caught stealing third; but Woodard advanced to second. Ready brought him home with a triple to right. Javier tied the game with a single to left. Ivan Del Villar reached on an infield single. Jarvis appeared to get the final out of the inning on a lineout however, Anthony Castaneda reached on catcher interference. Mendoza made them pay for that miscue, clearing the bases with a double to deep right field.
Jarvis pulled its starting pitcher Omar Bailey. Rodriguez brought home Mendoza with a single extending the lead to 6-2. In the second inning, Garza led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. He scored when Jarvis Christian's third baseman couldn't field the ball. Ready hit an RBI single and Castaneda hit a two-RBI single to extend the advantage to 10-2.
Woodard's RBI double and RBI singles by Ready and Javier pushed Wiley's advantage to double-digits in the third inning. The Wildcats added a run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
The Wildcats will tune up for Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at NCAA Division I institution Texas Southern University. The first pitch is at 1 p.m.
