WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Four Wiley University players recorded multiple hits, but the Wildcats could not hold off Southwestern Assemblies of God University in an 8-7 loss Tuesday at the Lions Athletic Complex.
Wiley (2-8) falls to 1-5 in road games and 1-7 overall away from home. Amir Mason went 3-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in. Ryan Ready went 2-for-5 and hit his first home run of the season in the fourth inning, driving in Kai Woodard. He scored two runs. Eddie Garza went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jhan Carlos Javier went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Wildcats fell behind after allowing four runs on four hits. Woodard led off the fourth with a single. He advanced to third on a walk and Ivan Del Villar's ground ball to first. Ready's first blast of the season cut the margin to two.
Javier led off the sixth with a single to left. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Del Villar. Ready singled and Brendan Mendoza was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Javier was thrown out at home on a botched hit-and-run. Mason tied the game with a two-RBI single to right. He advanced to third on the throw and gave the Wildcats the lead - scoring on Garza's single.
The lead was short-lived. A two-out walk would set up a two-run home run by Avery Chatman, which gave the lead back to the Lions. Wiley gave up another run in the seventh when the first batter singled and scored on an errant pickoff throw to first.
Mason sparked a two-out rally in the eighth inning with a single and a steal of second. Abel Rodriguez singled. Garza recorded his second base hit. An error brought home Mason and Rodriguez - tying the game at seven. Southwestern Assemblies of God regained the lead with a leadoff double and a pair of sacrifices.
Javier led off the ninth with a double. With two outs, Mendoza walked and Mason got hit by a pitch to load the bases. A strikeout ended the rally.
Jalen Porter made his second start of the season. He went five innings and struck out four. He held the Lions scoreless in four innings. Josiah Jackson pitched an inning, Jaylen Cream threw to two batters and Keyon Guillory tossed the final two innings, striking out three batters.
