Baseball falls in final two at Dillard
NEW ORLEANS – The Wiley College baseball team was unable to finish off Dillard University in a 7-6 loss and struggled at the plate in a 3-0 loss Sunday at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
The Wildcats (13-15, 5-4 GCAC) fall into a tie for third with Philander Smith College. The Bleu Devils are tied with Rust College for first in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
Wiley College fell behind by two runs after making two errors in the first inning. Marquis Kuykendall led off the second with a walk and stole second. A ground ball by Tre Wallace moved him to third. Devin Molina brought home Kuykendall with a groundball to second.
With one out in the third inning, Luis Mares tripled to right field which scored Allan Mendoza, who reached on a fielder's choice. Kai Woodard gave Wiley College the lead with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Mares.
Ivan Del Villar worked around a leadoff walk and held Dillard scoreless in the third. He got two of the first three batters out in the fourth. A walk and a single loaded the bases. Jerrius Vickers came in and got a flyout to end the fourth.
Mendoza led off the fifth with a walk. A passed ball and an error moved him to third. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Jhan Carlos Javier. Vickers worked around two base hits in the fifth and got a ground ball and a fly out to end the inning.
Molina led off the sixth with a walk. He stole second and advanced on a ground ball by Albert Thurston II. A ground ball by Chilek increased the lead to four. A.J. Garcia took over on the mound in the sixth. He allowed a leadoff walk which scored on a two-out single.
Garcia retired the first two batters in the seventh. A walk and a hit batter extended the inning. Isaac Burciaga took over. A passed ball moved runners into scoring position and a walk loaded the bases. A bases-clearing single by Channing Vernon tied the game.
The Wildcats were retired in order in the eighth inning. They made two errors in the bottom of the inning which allowed the winning run to score.
Wiley College was held to three hits. Mendoza and Kuykendall singled to go along with Mares' RBI triple. Del Villar started and went 3 2/3 innings. Only one of the two runs he allowed were earned. He walked five and struck out two. Vickers allowed two hits in 1 1/3 inning. Garcia pitched 1 2/3 innings. Burciaga threw the last two-thirds of an inning.
The Wildcats only mustered two hits in the finale – a double by Woodard and a single by Del Villar. In the fourth inning, Wiley College had runners in scoring position on a walk by Mares and Woodard's double. Neither runner advanced, as two ground outs and a fly out ended the inning.
Del Villar led off the seventh with a single. A wild pitch advanced him to second and he stole third. A groundout to third, a strikeout looking and a ground out to second ended the game. It's the first time in the regular season the Wildcats were shutout.
Daniel Cox did everything he could to keep Wiley College in the game, scattering three runs and nine hits over six innings. He struck out six batters. All three of Dillard's runs were scored with two outs in the inning.
The Wildcats will have a quick turnaround as they open their fourth GCAC series at Philander Smith College with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The series will conclude at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Panthers dropped two out of three games against Tougaloo College.
