Baseball heads to SAGU
The Wiley College baseball team will continue its stretch on the road with a doubleheader at Southwestern Assemblies of God University beginning at noon on Tuesday.
Live statistics will be available and the links can be found in the baseball schedule on wileyathletics.com. The Wildcats are coming off a split at Tougaloo College. They let a four-run lead slip away with two outs in the seventh inning of an 8-7 eight-inning loss but dominated the finale 13-5.
In the first game, Jacob Perez hit two doubles, scored two runs and drove in one. Ivan Del Villar went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored. Luis Mares went 2-for-5 and scored. Eddie Garza, Kai Woodard and Jhan Carlos Javier also had RBI base hits.
Daniel Cox started on the mound in Game 1 and went 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and only four of the seven runs he allowed were earned. Jerrius Vickers got the final out of the seventh. Woodard, who started the game at third base pitched the eighth inning.
Allan Mendoza went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs in Game 2. He hit a two-RBI single in the second inning, an RBI double in the fourth and a two-run single in the fifth. Orenthal Lewis went 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and a RBI. Javier went 2-for-4 with two runs.
A.J. Garcia made his second start on the mound. He only lasted 1 1/3 innings. Isaac Burciaga took over with the bases loaded and one out. He only allowed one run as he got a groundball and a pop up to end the inning. In 5 2/3 innings, he limited Tougaloo College to two runs on six hits and struck out four.
Several Wildcats are among the leaders in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Kai Woodard leads the conference with nine RBIs and three home runs. He ranks third in the conference with a .438 batting average. Javier is fourth in the conference with .419. Alexander San Miguel is third in the conference with seven RBIs and is one of 14 players with a home run. Jacob Perez is tied for third with seven RBIs and is tied for fourth with a home run. Eddie Garza is tied for third with five stolen bases.
On the mound, Jalen Porter is second in the conference with a 1.35 earned run average and is tied for first with two wins and 24 strikeouts. Burciaga also has two victories and ranks fifth in the conference with 15 strikeouts. Ivan Del Villar is also tied for first with two wins. Daniel Cox ranks fourth with 17 strikeouts. Garcia is the only pitcher to record a save.
The Lions (12-5) are on a three-game winning streak after sweeping a doubleheader against Central Baptist College. They are 11-2 at their home field. Cade Hendricks leads the team with a .333 batting average. He has hit two home runs and drove in seven. Bryson Collins hit .327 with four doubles, a triple and a home run. He has scored 14 runs and drove in 12. Collins has 10 stolen bases.
Michael Watson has made five starts on the mound won four. He has struck out 42 and holds a 2.79 ERA. Matthew Hickey is 2-1 in five starts with a 3.81 ERA. He has struck out 35 batters. Hendricks has three saves in four appearances – striking out six.
The Wildcats and Lions have met 32 times on the diamond. Wiley College leads the series 25-24 but hasn't won since February 9, 2019.
