
Eight earn Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar
Diverse Issues in Higher Education recognized eight Wiley University student-athletes for their outstanding performance in the classroom while competing in their respective sport, naming them 2025 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars. The announcement was published in their annual scholars edition on Wednesday.
Women's basketball athlete Elizabeth Camacho, women's cross country and track and field athlete Jean-Marie Farinha, volleyball athlete Fatima Ortega, men's soccer players Takumi Ota, Peter Tu and Santos Perez and baseball athletes Jacob Perez and Coren Lewis were among the many athletes across all levels of collegiate athletics selected nationwide.
They earned the honor by maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, at least a sophomore academically and being active in the community or on campus.
Jacob Perez, Camacho and Ortega earn the honor for the third time. This is the second time Farinha and Lewis were recognized. Santos Perez, Ota and Tu earn the honor for the first time.
All the athletes earned NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes in their respective sports. Jacob Perez, Camacho, Ortega and Ota graduated in May. The athletes will receive a copy of the June issue and a certificate of recognition.

As the name denotes, the annual Ashe edition is part of the magazine's quarter-century legacy of recognizing young, outstanding minority men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits.
In addition to their athletic ability, students named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5, be at least a sophomore academically, and be actively involved on their campuses or in their communities.
