Women's Soccer rallies in second half, tops Centenary
SHREVEPORT, La. - Wiley University forward Deynara Hernandez tied the match in the opening minutes of the second half. Freshman Feryi Sanchez gave Wiley the lead with her first career goal in a 2-1 victory over Centenary College of Louisiana on Friday at Atkins Field.
The Lady Wildcats (3-0-0) tie their best start in program history, matching the 2015 squad, which reached the conference semifinals. It's their first victory when allowing the first goal, since November 8, 2015 (3,589 days), and first when trailing at halftime dating back to September 11, 2015 (3,647 days).
The match was scoreless for nearly the entire first half. An offsides call against the Lady Wildcats allowed Centenary another possession, and it scored with 26 seconds remaining in the first half. Samantha Rodriguez put a shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but it was stopped by Centenary's goalkeeper Gracie Rellin.
In the 47th minute, Cynthia Lopez found Hernandez, who put in her second goal of the season. Yajaira Hernandez set up Sanchez's game-winner in the 70th minute. The Lady Wildcats outshot the Ladies 12-8 in the second half and 6-3 in shots on goal. They had more corner opportunities with four to Centenary's two.
Mariana Quijano made her third start in net. She stopped one shot in 49 minutes. Leah Ramirez started the second half and made two crucial saves en route to her first career victory.
