Baseball falls to Talladega, faces Florida Memorial in elimination game

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Wiley University baseball team fell behind early and could not respond in an 8-0 loss to Talladega College in the second round of the 2024 Black College World Series Thursday at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Wildcats (29-20) will play No. 6 seed Florida Memorial University later this evening as they look to extend their season.

The game was delayed 2.5 hours due to lightning. Wiley was limited to four hits. Jacob Perez got two with a single in the fourth and a double in the sixth. Amir Mason and Tyson Minter got the other hits.

Keyon Guillory started his third postseason game. He constantly dealt with traffic on the bases. The second inning was the only inning he didn't allow a baserunner. Guillory went five innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. The defense struggled, making four errors, which led to three runs for the Tornadoes. Dylan Washington pitched two innings and Coren Lewis held Talladega scoreless in the eighth.

Talladega took a 3-0 lead in the first, with two throwing errors leading to runs. It scored two runs in the third, and a run in the fourth and fifth innings.

Wiley's best scoring chance came in the fourth inning. Ivan Del Villar and Amir Mason walked to load the bases. Jhan Carlos Javier hit a shallow pop fly to right field. No one caught the right fielder's throw to the infield and Perez went for home but was thrown out to end the inning.

In the sixth inning, Perez doubled and Ready was hit by the pitch with one out. A strikeout looking and a flyout ended the opportunity.
